Second Time Around By: Comedienne, Kate Davis When my first baby was born I was a typical first mother, seeing if the baby was still breathing, getting used to my leaky body, nursing and sleep deprivation - but after a while my beautiful daughter and I got used to our routine, and our days together were peaceful but numbered. Not soon after I was pregnant again and number two was on his way. Everything went smoothly, he latched on right away, I don’t know if it was him or if I knew what I was doing but everything just seemed easier. The family was complete although my daughter who at the time was fifteen months had other words to say, although limited. “He’s cute, when is he going back?” Or, “He can’t stay.” I read her you’re getting a baby brother books, and made everyone who came to visit bring her presents but that didn’t deter my daughter from trying to get rid of him. As I cooked dinner one night and he was peacefully asleep in his basket in the living room on the couch, I heard a God awful scream; as I ran into the living room I saw my daughter sitting on his head in the basket! She seemed just as shocked as he did, I don’t think she was expecting such a big scream from such a little person. He was fine and I’m sure in her mind she was starting to plot yet another scheme to rid her of this intrusion they call “brother” (like Stewy in Family Guy). Just as I thought everyone was getting along, the baby was in his car seat on the porch out back and I had forgotten my car keys and ran back in. As I came out I noticed the baby’s tongue was moving weirdly in his mouth and as I went to investigate my daughter laughing said, “He’s a piggy bank.” She was feeding him pennies! My kids are older now and I have to say they were a gift to me and to each other because as soon as he could sit up and play, they became best friends.
